Die Krähe
– 2D animated short film –
Die Krähe (The Crow) is a 2D animated short film based on the eponymous song from German composer Franz Schubert’s song cycle Winterreise (Winter Journey). Combining digital animation with handmade textures such as aquatint etching and ink brush strokes, the digital and physical elements blend to conjure up a world located in-between the realms of reality and dream. The black-and-white visuals are based on the conflicting emotions of desperation, sadness, resignation and hope evoked by the classical music piece and the poem the song is based on. The subject matter of Schubert’s Winter Journey – loneliness, being and staying a foreigner in the world, lost love and death – is timeless and has inspired many artists up until today. My interpretation of Schubert’s work is based on extensive research about the history of the piece, as well as other artists’ work and interpretations and the analysis of the musical piece itself.
